40: The temptation of Christ is described in depth in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, among other places. In accordance with these passages, after being baptized by John the Baptist, Jesus fasted in the Judaean Desert for forty days and forty nights before ascending to the Father. During this time, Satan appeared to Jesus and attempted to seduce him with many temptations. When Jesus returned to Galilee after rejecting each of Satan's temptations, he was ready to begin his public ministry.
