Hathi
Around 5,000 years ago, people in India began training elephants for use in battle, religious ceremonies, and public parades. Even in modern times, the young Makbul continues to spend his formative years in close proximity to elephants, both wild and domesticated, that reside in the jungle that surrounds his home village in southern India. Makbul follows in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather by venturing deep into the forest in order to learn the age-old profession of the mahout, which is the traditional term for an elephant handler working for the government. This decision is made in spite of the fact that Makbul's mother is opposed to it. When an elephant calf by the name of Vikrama is born, Makbul is the one who takes care of the newborn animal.
