A Thousand Clowns
Nick, 12, lives with his uncle Murray, who is like Mr.Micawber from Dickens. Murray always hopes that something won't happen, but it always does. It turns out that there is a social worker, who falls in love with Murray and a little bit with Nick, too. Child welfare workers try to make Murray become more conventional as a condition for keeping Nick. His nephew, who has always admired his uncle's unconventional approach to life, tries to be a middleman and act as a go-between for the two sides. In the end, the uncle caved in to society in order to save the relationship, which bothered the boy.
