Burden of Dreams

Werner Herzog of Germany begins work on his 1982 epic "Fitzcarraldo" but quickly encounters major obstacles, ranging from casting issues to his own obstinate unwillingness to use special effects. After reshooting much of the film due to a recasting of the lead actor, his crew must then haul an old-fashioned steamboat over a mountain using only labor. Herzog struggles to realize his vision with a tenacity bordering on insanity, vowing to see the film finished even if it means his demise.
