Descendant
Beyond what has been written, history exists. For many decades, the people who live in Mobile, Alabama's Africatown have exchanged tales about their ancestry. Their village was established by ancestors who were transported as slaves in 1860 on the Clotilda, the final known and illegal slave ship. Upon landing, the ship was purposefully scuttled, but its memories and legacy survived. The long-awaited finding of Clotilda's remains gives this people a concrete link to their ancestors and validates a past they wanted to hide.
