Fourteen
Jo and Mara are inseparably close. Mara is steady, whereas Jo is troubled; they met at the age of 14. Because none of their lives is secure, their jobs are unstable, and their dates are fruitless, writing is something they do on the side, as is so frequently the case in Brooklyn. Among the mundane happenings and chit-chat, the only constant is their friendship, or, more precisely, its dynamic: Mara's phone will ring and Jo will ask for her assistance; Mara will drop everything for her, but Jo's mind will already be elsewhere by the time Mara arrives. The plot advances softly, alighting each time on another manifestation of the same pattern, even as Jo's dips deepen and Mara's wrath deepens. As time passes, there are new jobs, new partners, drugs, tears, and new beginnings, as well as a pregnancy and, eventually, a little child, all of which gradually erode Jo and Mara's friendship.
