Francesco
St. Francis of Assisi's (1181-1226) life as told by his followers who gather after his death to tell stories for Leone to record: a privileged and virile youth, a prisoner of war, an heir who abandons his father and gives everything to the poor, a beggar for others, and an inspiration to friends who accept the Gospels' life of poverty. He seeks the Pope's blessing and faces persecution at the hands of the family of St. Clare, Chiara Offreduccio (1194-1253). Numerous individuals join the organization he establishes and then revolt against his expectations. In near despair – and in poor health – he composes a Rule to present to the Pope; then, the Lord gives him a message. He passes away happily.
