Original Cast Album: Company
The musical "Company" by Stephen Sondheim debuted on Broadway in the spring of 1970, and tradition demands that the cast recording is made the following Sunday. The now-legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker documented the preparation of the original cast recording, the interaction between Sondheim and the actors, and the dynamics of attempting to record a live performance. Elaine Stritch's rendition of "The Ladies Who Lunch" serves as the climax of the film. It performed on Broadway for two years and won six Tony Awards, including "Best Musical." The proposal to produce a series of "Original Cast Album" films never came to fruition.
