Shanghai Grand

Gangsters are aplenty in this vivacious, romantic crime drama set in Shanghai during World War II. Hsu Wen-story Chiang's begins when he washes up on a beach near Shanghai. Ting Lik, a gentle beggar who is hopelessly in love with Feng Ching-Ching, the daughter of a powerful mobster, takes him home. Ting Lik quickly ascends the criminal ranks to become one of the city's most prominent gangsters. Hsu remains at his side throughout and utilizes his own strength to get revenge on those who attempted to assassinate him much earlier. Later in the film, the focus shifts to the escapades of Feng, who had a relationship with Hsu years earlier while he was on the run in northern China. Returning to the present, Hsu and Feng rekindle their affair until Hsu discovers that Feng's father is one of his adversaries and murders him. Feng is driven insane by grief. Ting discovers this and swears vengeance on Hsu.
