The Man in the Sky
John Mitchell's efforts to provide a better life for his wife Mary and their two children appear bound to failure, and he holds himself responsible. Mitchell will test the company's new rocket-propulsion transport plane at the Conway Aero-Manufacturing Company in Wolverhampton, transporting two essential passengers: Ministry official Crabtree and buyer's representative Ashmore. Mitchell learns from his boss, Reg Conway, that if Ashmore does not approve the jet, the company would fail and Mitchell will lose his job because the plane is uninsured and the company's whole capital is attached to it. An engine catches fire in the air, and the passengers and other crew abandon ship, but Mitchell refuses to comply with instructions to ditch the aircraft in the Irish Sea.
