The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

Kikunosuke Onoue, the adopted son of a legendary actor and himself an actor specializing in female roles, discovers in late-nineteenth-century Tokyo that he is only praised for his acting because of his father's heirship. Devastated by this, he seeks comfort from Otoku, a household servant, and the two fall in love. Kikunosuke gets resolved to leave home and establish himself as an actor on his own terms, and Otoku follows him faithfully.
