When a Woman Ascends the Stairs
Everybody calls Keiko "Mama." She is a hostess on the Ginza, 30 years old, and a widow, and she tells her story to us. It's like a circle: She talks about how she has to be cheerful around drunk people, dress well and live well to show that she's confident, need money to pay for all of this, and know that she's getting older. This is how she describes life: Because of her tarnished job, it's hard for her to get married. She could also be kept, or she could take out a loan to buy a bar for herself. People who loan you money will want to get their money back. Each way has its own risks. Is what men think about Keiko true? Is she able to make a choice?
