Margaret Hale is actually a southerner in the place vicarage located in the industrial northern town of Milton. From the shock of her move, she misjudges cotton mill-owner John Thornton, whose intensity of purpose and passion are a match on her pride and willfulness. After the workers of Milton telephone a strike, Margaret takes their side, and also the two have been brought into conflict.
