St. Elsewhere
St. Elsewhere is an American medical drama that first aired on NBC from October 26, 1982 to May 25, 1988. Ed Flanders, Norman Lloyd, and William Daniels played teaching doctors at a Boston hospital that wasn't very well known. They helped interns make important medical and life decisions. The show was made by MTM Enterprises, which also made the popular NBC police drama Hill Street Blues at the same time. The two shows were often compared because they both had ensemble casts and serialized storylines that crossed over. St. Elsewhere was filmed at CBS/MTM Studios, which used to be called CBS/Fox Studios. By chance, 20th Century Fox bought MTM Enterprises in the 1990s and got the rights to the show. During its 6-season, 137-episode run, St. Elsewhere gained a small but loyal fan base thanks to its mix of gritty, realistic drama and black comedy. The show also did well with Nielsen's 18-49 age demographic, a group of young, wealthy people that TV advertisers want to reach. During its run, the show also got good reviews from critics and won 13 Emmy Awards for its writing, acting, and directing. TV Guide put St. Elsewhere at #20 on its list of "The 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time" in 2002. In a 1993 issue, the magazine also named it the best drama series of the 1980s.
